Who can play roller derby?

Anyone who is physically able* to learn how to skate!

It's a common misconception that roller derby is a sport only played by women. While it's true that modern roller derby is predominately a women's sport, it is open to all genders. Many "women's" teams are also open to non-binary/genderfluid/genderqueer/gnc skaters as well as trans man (and obviously trans women). And as you'll see on our Map, there are a hefty number of men's teams and mixed open/all gender teams around the world.

As far as age goes, some junior roller derby clubs accept children starting at age 6 (no contact for the littles) and in adult derby, there's no upper limit. As of March 2022, the oldest known roller derby player was 82-year-old Merby Dick (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=2005929072912690&id=454641671374779&set=a.478514118987534)who started at 70, which goes to that show it's never to late!

*As of 2024, to our knowledge, despite some efforts,(https://www.facebook.com/seattlesledderby/) there are no adaptive roller derby clubs. BUT knowing the derby community, it's only a matter of time until the sport becomes more inclusive.
